PROGRAMME WORLD CONGRESS 2002

COBH - The programme of the 13th World Congress of the World Carillon Federation to be held in Cobh (Ireland) consists of a variety of activities. Recital programmes throughout the congress will reflect the theme of the Congress: The Carillon and the Music of the People. There will be no special partner programme. However, there will be no shortage of suggestions of alternative (non-carillon) activities available from the tourist office.

The congress starts officially on Sunday July 28, 2002 and ends on Thursday August 2, 2002. The Executive Committee and the Committee of Delegates meet on Saturday July 27 and on Wednesday August 1 in the Commodore hotel.

  SATURDAY JULY 27
  10.30-13.00 WCF Executive Committee meeting.
  14.00-18.00 WCF Committee of Delegates meeting.
 
  SUNDAY JULY 28
  10.00-11.30 Five-minutes reports of the 12 National Guild Presidents, or their representatives.
  12.00-13.00 Mass in the Cathedral celebrated by Most Reverend John Magee, bishop of Cloyne.
  13.30-15.00 Formal opening of Congress at the Sirius Arts Centre.
  17.00-18.00 Recital on the Cathedral Carillon consisting of music played at the first World Carillon Congress held in Mechelen in 1922, thus commemorating the eightieth anniversary of this event (Koen Cosaert).
  18.00-20.00 Delegates free for dinner.
  20.30-22.00 Evening event: Céilí Irish dancing session.
 
  MONDAY JULY 29
  10.30-11.00 Morning recital on travelling carillon down by the sea front (Trevor Workman).
  11.00-12.45 Bookshop open. Delegates also free to explore the town and visit the Heritage Centre or other galleries.
  11.15-12.30 Open forum of new Strauss console, with Bob van Wely (Chair WCF Keyboard Committee).
  13.00-14.00 Lunchtime recitals on Cathedral Carillon (Véronique Lontie / Georg Köppl).
  14.00-15.00 Delegates free for lunch.
  15.00-17.00 Boat trips of harbour for delegates.
  15.30-16.30 Afternoon recital with suitable maritime music including parts of Händel's Water Music on Cathedral Carillon (Hylke Banning).
  17.00-18.00 Evening recitals on Cathedral Carillon (Arie Abbenes / Andrea McCrady / Timothy Hurd).
  18.00-20.00 Delegates free for dinner.
  20.30-22.00 Evening event: Irish Traditional Music Night.
 
  TUESDAY JULY 30
  9.15 Delegates travel by coach to University College Cork.
  10.15 Morning coffee reception for delegates, sponsored by Music Department.
  10.30-11.00 Morning recital on travelling carillon in quadrangle (Anna Maria Reverté).
  11.15-12.45 Lectures in Boole 2 lecture theatre.
   
  • In Search of the Origin of the Carillon: An Interdisciplinary Approach (Luc Rombouts).
  • The Carillon and the Music of the People: Leen 't Hart and His Folksong Arrangements (Laura Meilink-Hoedemaker).
  • Carillons in the Context of Community Bells (David H. Shayt).

  19.00-20.00 Sherry reception of professor Gerard T. Wrixon, president of University College Cork.
  20.00-23.00 Congress Banquet in UCC Main Restaurant
 
  WEDNESDAY JULY 31
  11.00-12.00 Morning recitals on travelling carillon located on the quay (Duo Oztinato: Helen Robinson & Lyn Fuller / Rosemarie Seuntiëns).
  11.00-13.00 Bookshop open.
  11.00-13.00 WCF Committee of Delegates meeting (Commodore Hotel). This will include: 1) Members of the Utrechtse Klokkenspel Vereniging will make a presentation advocating the holding of Congress 2006 in Utrecht; 2) Members of the Polish Guild (PCA) will make a presentation advocating the holding of Congress 2006 in Gdansk.
  12.30-13.30 Lunchtime recitals on Cathedral Carillon (Monika Kazmierczak / Cecilia Kehoe).
  13.30-14.00 Delegates free for lunch.
  14.00-17.00 Coach trip to Fota Wildlife Park, accompanied by travelling carillon.
  15.00-15.30 Recital on travelling carillon (Patrice Poliart).
  15.00-16.00 Afternoon recitals on Cathedral Carillon (Vegar Sandholt / Lvsitanvs Carillon Duo: Ana Lúcia Elias & Sara Elias).

  11.15-12.30 Closing public session for delegates in Commodore hotel, including presentation Vegar Sandholt on Congress 2004 in Oslo.
  12.00-12.30 Recital on travelling carillon in front of church in Carrigtwohill (Yuko Tajima).
  12.30-13.30 Lunchtime recitals on Cathedral Carillon (Peter Bremer / Malgosia Drzewiecka).
  13.45 Delegates travel by coach to Jameson Heritage Centre in Midleton for reception and tour of distillery.
